BD Reveals Elyra Laser System for Kidney Stone Treatment

BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) has introduced the Elyra thulium fiber laser (TFL) system, an advanced laser platform for kidney stone care.

The Elyra TFL system uses thulium laser tech for efficient stone dusting and reduced stone migration. Its air-cooled design provides quieter operation and a smaller footprint compared to traditional laser systems, the company said.

It’s available in two configurations (Elyra and Elyra Plus) to offer flexibility to choose the system that best matches varying operational needs. The system boasts an intuitive user interface, quick startup, customizable presets, and an optional wireless footswitch to streamline workflows in stone lithotripsy and soft tissue procedures.

BD said the platform enables agility in advancing future generations of the tech. The company recently completed the first clinical cases using Elyra Plus TFL at a leading medical center, where it received positive feedback from urologists and laser technicians.

Users noted the intuitive interface and integrated safety features, which they said supported ease of use and confidence during procedures.

“Elyra demonstrates how BD innovates with speed and purpose, introducing technology that helps clinicians deliver high‑quality care more efficiently,” said Mike Cusack, worldwide president of Urology and Critical Care at BD. “By pairing advanced TFL technology with a clinician‑focused design, Elyra streamlines kidney stone care and supports greater adaptability across diverse procedural needs.”

Earlier this week, the company announced it had named company group chairman of Johnson & Johnson Vision Peter Menziuso as its new executive VP and president of BD Interventional, effective June 1.
